STCW Basic Safety Training Week (BSW)

Our individual dates for STCW Basic Safety courses are still currently being arranged if you require to book separately.

Under STCW, all new entrants to the maritime industries are required to complete an STCW Basic Safety Training Week before joining a vessel.

It is made up of the following courses,

Personal Survival Techniques (PST)

Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (FPFF)

Elementary First Aid (EFA)

Security Awareness (PSA)

Personal Safety and Social Responsibility (PSSR)

These courses can be taken individually or can be taken together in this cost saving package.

Successful delegates will be awarded with an MCA approved STCW certifications (EFA, FPFF, PST, PSSR and PSA) after a short exam. 

Every 5 years for PST and FPFF elements.

A Government issued, photographic proof of identity on the day of the course and this should take the form of either a valid Passport or a driving licence or a valid discharge book (not more than 10 years old).   

STCW requires all seafarers to receive familiarization and basic safety training or instruction in accordance with section A-VI/1 of the STCW Code. The minimum requirements for familiarization and basic safety training are contained within the Basic Safety Training Week (BSTW) and meet the appropriate standard of competence.

STCW Personal Survival Technique Update (PSTU)

The STCW Personal Survival Techniques Refresher Training is set up to offer prospective delegates with the necessary training to maintain proficiency as required in the STCW 2010 Manila Amendments. The half a day course is comprised by a blend of theory development and practical experience. Non-swimmers are permitted on this course and will always be supervised by fully qualified instructors.  

Theory Development 

  • Main types of maritime emergencies 

  • Types of life-saving appliances 

  • Survival craft 

  • Equipment in survival craft 

  • Location of personal life-saving appliances 

  • Principles of survival during a maritime emergency 

Practical Experience 

  • How to don a life jacket 

  • How to safely jump from a height into water 

  • How to right an inverted raft whilst wearing a life jacket 

  • How to swim whilst wearing a life jacket 

  • How to board a survival craft from the water whilst wearing a life jacket 

  • What initial actions you need to take when boarding survival craft 

  • How to operate survival craft equipment

  • Seafarers who have 6 months or more sea service prior to 1 August 1998 and were exempt from basic safety courses

  1. Provisional delegates are required to provide a signed self-declaration form as prerequisite to attending the PST refresher course.

STCW Fire Prevention and Firefighting Update (FPFFU)

The STCW Fire Prevention and Firefighting Update course is set up to offer delegates who for all seafarers with designated safety duties who hold a Fire Prevention and Firefighting certificate, in order they maintain proficiency, as set out in section A-VI/1 of the STCW Code. It deals with the precautions needed to minimise the risk of fires, how fires are caused and how to extinguish them. Our new multi-story steel fire unit will be used for live fire training. 

 Theoretical: 

  • Fire theory 

  • Causes of ignition 

  • Onboard safety 

  • The conditions required for fire 

  • Methods to extinguish fire 

  • The spread of fire 

  • Classes of fire 

Practical: 

  • Carrying out the initial actions on discovering a fire 

  • Identifying the environment 

  • Correctly using portable and mobile fire extinguishers 

  • The use of hoses, nozzles and hose equipment 

  • Extinguishing different types of fire 

  • Testing and using BA equipment 

  1. Delegates must have completed the STCW Fire Prevention and Firefighting course; OR Have an STCW Fire Prevention and Firefighting course older than 5 years and be able to prove having taken part in drills and onboard training as an officer or rating in the last 5 years.
  2. You must fill out a Medical Self Declaration form, in order to prove fitness capabilities before undergoing the course. Please consult a doctor if you are unsure.

You must wear comfortable clothes, but not jeans or clothes with metal in them.

STCW Proficiency in Survival Craft & Rescue Boat Update (PSCRBU) Route 1

The STCW Updating Proficiency in Survival Craft & Rescue Boat (Route 1) course is set to offer seafarer that have already attained an STCW Proficiency in Survival Craft & Rescue Boat certificate or already have the PSCRBU and need a revalidation. Once you have been awarded the PSCRBU, you must, under the STCW 2010 Manila Amendments (STCW Section A-VI/2), complete the course every five years to maintain proficiency. Delegates are required to be fit enough to undertake the practical aspects; handling inflatable rescue boats, lifeboats and life rafts. 

• Abandonment Procedures 

• Survival Craft boat Handling 

• Familiarisation of launch davits 

• Search and Rescue Techniques 

  1. Delegates must have completed the STCW Proficiency in Survival Craft & Rescue Boats (PSCRB) course within five years of attainment; OR Have an STCW Proficiency in Survival Craft & Rescue Boats  (PSCRB) course older than 5 years and be able to prove having taken part in drills and onboard training as an officer or rating in the last 5 years.

This course is part of the mandatory updating certification requirements under the STCW 2010 amendments for all seafarers with designated safety duties who hold an advance firefighting certificate. This course will provide the delegate with the necessary refresher training under the STCW 2010 amendments for Advance Fire Fighting.

This is a theoretical online course; and it covers a range of subjects. It deals with firefighting procedures, communication and coordination, ventilation control, fire precautions, management and control of injured persons, procedure for communicating with shore side fire fighter.

Once completed, candidates will be awarded with the MCA approved STCW Updated Proficiency in Advanced Firefighting certificate.

STCW Advanced Fire Fighting Update (AFFU) Route 2

The STCW Updated Proficiency in Advanced Fire Fighting course relates to Section A-VI/3 of the STCW Code (paragraph 50 that states that ‘Seafarers qualified in accordance with paragraph 4 in advanced fire fighting shall be required, every 5 years, to provide evidence of having maintained the required standard of competence, to undertake the tasks, duties and responsibilities listed in column 1 of Table A VI/3.’ 

  • Control fire fighting operations onboard ship 

  • Organise and control fire fighting parties 

  • Inspect and service fire detection and extinguishing systems and equipment 

  • Investigate and compile reports on incidents involving fire 

  1. Proof of completing the STCW Advanced Fire Fighting training course (STCW Reg VI/3 para 1 & Sec A-VI/3) or recognised equivalent pre 31 January 2000 (i.e. MNTB 4 Day Fire Fighting Course ).

  2. You must also complete/show evidence of the updating training in Proficiency in Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting as per MSN1865.

STCW Medical Care on Board Ship Update (MCOBU)

The STCW Proficiency in Medical Care On-board Update (MCOBU) course is set up to cover the requirements given in Article 4(1)(b) of the Directive ‘92/29 EEC: Service as Master or the person in charge of medical care on UK-registered vessels’. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) requires that the Master and the person designated to take charge of medical care and medicines on-board to hold an MCA-approved Proficiency in Medical Care (PMC) (STCW A-VI/4 paragraph 4-6) certificate or an MCA-approved Updated Proficiency in Medical Care certificate, issued within the preceding 5 years. 

This course offers delegates with the Proficiency in Medical Care certificate, or Proficiency in Medical Care Updating certificate a refresher in knowledge and skills, every five years. 

  • The delegate understands how to participate in the coordinated provision of medical care to a person on board

  • The delegate can assess and provide care to an ill person on board

  • The delegate can assess and provide care to an injured casualty on board

Successful candidates will be awarded with an MCA approved STCW Proficiency in Medical Care On-board Update (MCOBU) certificate, after a short exam.
