STCW Advanced Training for Service on Ships Using Fuels Covered Within the IGF Code (AIGF)

This course covers the hazards, operational requirements and safety considerations of working with low flashpoint fuels covered by the IGF code.

We will enhance the training experience with practical experiences, and the course will cover the safety of operations in depth.

MCA approved STCW Certificate of Proficiency in Advanced Training for Service on Ships Using Fuels covered within the IGF code.

  • The learner understands the chemical and physical properties of fuels covered within the IGF Code and control measures associated with their use as a fuel. 

  • The learner is able to safely manage the fuel processes and practices on vessels using fuels covered within the IGF Code.

  • The learner is able to safely manage the fuel systems in compliance with legislative requirements.

  • The learner is able to manage health, safety, emergency response and environmental precautions in working on vessels using fuels covered within the IGF Code.

  • 1 month seatime on ships covered by the IGF code
  • At least 3 bunkering operations on IGF code vessels
  • STCW Certificate of Proficiency in Basic Training for Service on Ships Using Fuels covered within the IGF code.

STCW Basic Training for Service on Ships using Fuels Covered within the IGF Code (BIGF)

The MCA approved Basic Training for Service on Ships using Fuels Covered within the IGF Code intends to provide a basic training for seafarers responsible for designated safety duties associated with the care, use or in emergency response to the fuels on board ships subject to the IGF code. 

  • Contribute to the safe operation of a ship subject to IGF code 

  • Take precautions to prevent hazards on a ship subject to the IGF code 

  • Apply occupational health and safety precautions and measures 

  • Respond to emergencies 

  • Take precautions to prevent pollution of the environment from the release of fuels found on ships subject to the IGF code 

MCA approved STCW Certificate of Proficiency in Basic training for Service on Ships Using Fuels Covered Within the IGF code. 

  1. STCW Tanker Fire Fighting  

  1. Photographic ID (A Government issued, photographic proof of identity on the day of the course and this should take the form of either a valid Passport or a driving license or a valid discharge book). 

Officers and ratings who are responsible for designated safety duties associated with the care, use or in emergency response to the fuel on board ships subject to the IGF Code.

What is the IGF Code, and why is it important?
The IGF Code (International Code of Safety for Ships using Gases or other Low-flashpoint Fuels) is a mandatory safety code under SOLAS, developed by the IMO. It sets standards for the design, equipment, training, and operations of ships using low-flashpoint fuels like LNG. IGF training ensures that seafarers are competent in managing the unique hazards associated with these fuels.

What IGF courses does Stream Marine Training offer?
Stream Marine Training offers both Basic and Advanced IGF Code training, approved by the MCA:

  • Basic IGF Code Course – for seafarers responsible for designated safety duties related to fuel systems.

  • Advanced IGF Code Course – for masters, engineers, and other senior personnel directly responsible for the operation of low-flashpoint fuel systems onboard.

Who should take an IGF Code course?
The Basic course is suitable for all seafarers assigned duties relating to the fuel systems of gas-fuelled ships.

The Advanced course is intended for senior personnel responsible for the actual operation and decision-making in connection with these fuel systems, such as Masters, Chief Engineers, and First Engineers.

How long is IGF certification valid for?
Once obtained, IGF Code certification is generally valid for 5 years, in line with STCW requirements. Seafarers must undertake refresher training or provide evidence of continued competence to renew certification.

What is the difference between Basic and Advanced IGF Code training?

  • The Basic IGF course focuses on hazard awareness, operational procedures, and emergency response for those assisting with gas-fuelled systems.

  • The Advanced IGF course goes deeper into system design, fuel handling, emergency shutdown procedures, and requires prior completion of the Basic course or equivalent experience.

Are IGF courses offered in person or online?
Due to the technical and safety-critical nature of IGF training, courses are delivered in person at Stream Marine Training's Glasgow campus. This ensures proper assessment of competence through practical and theoretical training.

Do I need prior experience to enrol in an IGF course?
Yes.

  • For the Basic IGF course, seafarers must hold an STCW certificate and be assigned fuel-related safety duties.

  • For the Advanced IGF course, delegates must have completed the Basic course and have seagoing service on vessels using low-flashpoint fuels.
