Engineering Cadetship
As an Engineer Officer you will be responsible for operating and maintaining all the electrical and mechanical equipment onboard the vessel. This includes the power generation and distribution, propulsion systems on board, as well as the pump/ventilation systems and lifts. There will be plenty of opportunity to dismantle and repair faulty equipment, before reassembling it back into operation.
A potential engineer officer should have good problem-solving skills, be practical and resourceful and have a real interest in all things engineering.
As well as this, they must also have good mathematical and communication skills, be able to work under pressure and inspire confidence in others. You must be ready to learn and adapt to new skills and technologies.
The Aim of the Engine Cadetship.
The aim of the Engineer Officer Cadetship is to gain a recognised academic qualification though the nautical college you attend, as well as achieving your first Certificate of Competency (CoC).
Upon successful completion of your training course you will be issued with your Officer of the Watch Certificate (OOW), this allows you to gain employment as a Junior Officer and start to climb your way through the ranks with the ultimate aim of becoming Chief Engineer, leading and supervising the engine department on board a vessel.
The Entry Requirements
The minimum entry requirements to become an Engineer Officer are:
- A minimum of four National 5’s/GSCE at grade C or above which must include Maths, English and a physical science.
- Hold a valid UK/EEA Passport.
- Have been normally resident within the UK for the last 36 months.
