Stream Marine Training is pleased to announce we have been approved by OPITO to deliver the Offshore Lifeboat Coxswain Initial Training (Twin Fall) course, designed specifically for offshore personnel who need to qualify as lifeboat coxswains responsible for launching and commanding Totally Enclosed Motor Propelled Survival Craft (TEMPSC) during emergency situations.

This specialist 28-hour course addresses the critical need for trained coxswains who can safely launch, manoeuvre and command offshore lifeboats during emergencies, ensuring the safety of personnel during evacuations from offshore installations.

Why Offshore Lifeboat Coxswain Training Matters

Offshore installations operating in challenging environments rely on competent lifeboat coxswains to lead emergency evacuations. When situations demand immediate evacuation, the coxswain’s ability to launch the lifeboat safely, navigate to a safe area and maintain crew welfare can make the difference between a controlled evacuation and a critical incident.

The OPITO Offshore Lifeboat Coxswain Initial Training (Twin Fall) standard provides a structured training framework that equips personnel with both the technical knowledge and practical skills required to perform this essential safety role effectively.

What the Offshore Lifeboat Coxswain Course Covers

Our OPITO-approved Offshore Lifeboat Coxswain Initial Training provides delegates with comprehensive practical and theoretical training in lifeboat operations. The course follows OPITO’s recommended 25% theory to 75% practical split, ensuring participants gain hands-on experience with the equipment and procedures they will use in real emergency situations.

Key Learning Objectives

Delegates will develop practical competence in three critical areas:

Roles and Responsibilities – Understand the coxswain’s duties during emergency situations, including command, communication and decision-making responsibilities.

TEMPSC Operations – Gain detailed knowledge of how Totally Enclosed Motor Propelled Survival Craft work, including launching mechanisms, propulsion systems, safety equipment and onboard systems.

Launch and Manoeuvring Procedures – Develop practical skills in safely launching the TEMPSC using twin fall davit systems, manoeuvring the craft to a safe area and maintaining crew safety throughout the evacuation process.

Who Should Attend This Course?

The Offshore Lifeboat Coxswain Initial Training (Twin Fall) is suitable for offshore personnel who have been nominated or selected to fulfil the coxswain role aboard offshore installations. This includes:

  • Offshore installation personnel designated as lifeboat coxswains
  • Platform emergency response team members
  • Anyone requiring OPITO Offshore Lifeboat Coxswain certification

Entry Requirements

Delegates must hold valid certification for one of the following:

  • BOSIET (Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training) with Emergency Breathing System (EBS)
  • BOSIET with Compressed Air Emergency Breathing System (CA-EBS)
  • TBOSIET (Tropical BOSIET)
  • FOET (Further Offshore Emergency Training) with EBS or CA-EBS
  • TFOET (Tropical FOET)
  • THUET (Tropical HUET)

Additionally, delegates must possess a valid offshore medical certificate, operator-approved medical certificate or complete medical screening provided by Stream Marine Training before participating in practical exercises.

Certification and Validity

Upon successful completion of the course, delegates receive OPITO Offshore Lifeboat Coxswain Initial Training (Twin Fall) certification, valid for two years.

The certification enables delegates to fulfil the coxswain role on offshore installations equipped with twin fall TEMPSC systems. Refresher training – OLCFT (Offshore Lifeboat Coxswain Further Training) (Twin Fall) – is required before the certificate expires to maintain competency and certification.

Supporting Offshore Safety Through Specialist Training

Offshore emergency response relies on personnel who can perform under pressure when lives depend on quick, confident action. Lifeboat coxswains carry significant responsibility during evacuations, requiring both technical knowledge and practical skills developed through realistic training scenarios.

Stream Marine Training’s OPITO-approved Offshore Lifeboat Coxswain course delivers training in a safe, controlled environment that replicates the challenges coxswains face during real emergencies. Our experienced instructors bring operational offshore experience, ensuring delegates leave the course prepared for the realities of the role.
