The Oil and Gas Transition Training Fund, by Skills Development Scotland, supports Scottish residents who have worked in oil and gas to retrain into clean and sustainable energy, wider decarbonisation of the economy, advanced manufacturing, life sciences and defence.

You can use transition funding to complete GWO training at Stream Marine Training.

GWO Training for Renewable Energy

GWO (Global Wind Organization) certification is industry-recognised training for personnel working on offshore wind farms and renewable energy installations. GWO qualifications are required by operators before workers can access roles on offshore wind platforms.

Offshore personnel transitioning from traditional oil and gas to renewable energy roles require GWO certification to demonstrate competence in the safety systems, equipment and procedures specific to wind farm operations.

What We Offer

Stream Marine Training delivers GWO-approved training for personnel transitioning into offshore renewable energy roles. Our courses are designed for offshore workers moving from traditional oil and gas into wind energy and renewable operations.

Our instructors bring operational experience from offshore installations. Training reflects current industry practice and real-world offshore procedures.

GWO courses available:

  • GWO Basic Safety Training – Foundation safety qualification covering emergency procedures, first aid, survival techniques and equipment familiarisation essential for all offshore wind workers
  • GWO Working at Height and Manual Handling – Practical safety training for working at height on wind turbine structures, including manual handling procedures and rescue awareness
  • GWO Enhanced First Aid – Extended first aid training covering medical emergencies in offshore environments where immediate shore-based medical support is not available
  • GWO Advanced Rescue Training – Advanced rescue and emergency response procedures for offshore wind operations

Each course combines classroom learning with practical, scenario-based training.

Why Renewable Energy Requires Specific Training

Offshore renewable energy operations differ significantly from traditional offshore oil and gas work. Wind farm environments, turbine structures, and emergency response procedures require training distinct from oil and gas certification.

GWO qualifications are designed specifically for renewable energy operations. They address working at height on turbine structures, equipment-specific safety systems and emergency procedures in wind farm environments. Personnel with traditional offshore experience require GWO certification before employers will deploy them on renewable energy installations.

Eligibility

You may be eligible for transition funding if you:

  • Are currently working or have recently worked (within the last 24 months) in the oil and gas sector or its supply chain
  • Live in Scotland
  • Have the right to live and work in the UK

Exemptions to the 24-month requirement may apply for career returners where reasons include caring responsibilities, illness, disability or injury.

  2. Create your account and build your training package (select GWO courses relevant to your career goals)
  3. Submit your application to the fund
  4. Skills Development Scotland will review your application
  5. Once approved, contact Stream Marine Training to book your course

Training Timeline

Once funding is approved, training must be booked within 14 days and should commence within one month of booking.

GWO courses at Stream Marine Training are delivered over 3-5 days depending on the qualification. Courses combine theoretical classroom learning with practical, hands-on training.
