Stream Marine Technical is attending and sponsoring the Isle of Man Maritime Conference 2026 on 16 July at the Comis Hotel in Douglas. The event brings together industry leaders, stakeholders and policymakers across the maritime sector, with focus areas spanning digital, skills and seafarers, business and superyachts.

Our alternative fuels technical consultant, Craig Smith, has been invited to participate in a panel discussion at the conference.

Craig Smith on the Panel

Craig recently contributed to EV Fires Afloat, a webinar hosted jointly with Ship Management International exploring the challenges of managing electric vehicle battery fires onboard vessels. The discussion highlighted how rapidly evolving battery technology creates safety challenges that traditional maritime training was not designed to address.

The insights from that webinar extend beyond electric vehicle cargo. Battery-powered equipment is increasingly common across maritime operations, from water toys and tenders to backup power systems and emergency equipment. Understanding battery fire risks is becoming essential knowledge for personnel across multiple maritime contexts.

At the Isle of Man Maritime Conference, Craig will contribute that expertise to the panel discussion, bringing practical perspective on how the maritime industry must prepare for battery-related fire risks across multiple applications.

Why This Matters

The conference’s focus on skills and seafarers aligns directly with SMT’s mission: developing maritime professionals who understand emerging operational challenges. Battery fire awareness, alternative fuel systems and the human factors that underpin safe decision-making are not optional knowledge. They are core to modern maritime competence.

The combination of digitalisation, decarbonisation and rapidly evolving technology means maritime training must keep pace with operational reality. That requires bringing together industry leaders, training providers and technical specialists to discuss what crews actually need to understand.

About the Event

Interactive workshops take place on 15 July, with the main conference on 16 July. Further details and event agenda are available through Isle of Man Maritime Hubs.
