The conversation around alternative fuels in the maritime industry is no longer a future-facing thought exercise. It is already shaping the present.

As operators respond to tighter emissions regulations and rising expectations around sustainability, the demand for cleaner marine fuels is rapidly increasing. One of the most talked-about options is methanol, and it is already in use on over 200 vessels globally.

At Stream Marine Training, we are focused on making sure the workforce is ready. Alongside our sister company, Stream Marine Technical, we are delivering specialist training to support the safe handling and operation of vessels using low-flashpoint fuels such as methanol, ammonia, and hydrogen.

Why Methanol?

Methanol is gaining momentum as a marine fuel due to its relative ease of storage, lower emissions profile, and growing industry confidence in its scalability. Compared to traditional marine fuels, it produces significantly lower levels of nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulphur oxides (SOx), and particulates.

These benefits make it a compelling option for meeting IMO 2030 and 2050 targets. However, methanol still presents unique risks and operational requirements. That is where regulated, safety-driven training becomes essential.

Industry Moves: The UK Chamber of Shipping’s Focus on Methanol

The UK Chamber of Shipping is actively addressing this shift through a series of workshops exploring alternative fuels. Their session titled “Meet the Molecule: Methanol” underscores the growing urgency to understand methanol’s real-world application and implications for the workforce.

This is a clear signal that alternative fuels are no longer a niche subject. They are becoming a core part of the industry’s strategy, and with that comes the responsibility to ensure crews are trained, confident, and compliant.

Watch the Webinar: Meet the Molecule

To support industry understanding and share insight from the training frontline, Stream Marine Technical joined forces with Ship Management International for a dedicated webinar, Meet the Molecule: Methanol – IGF Training in Focus.

In this session, our instructors Iain Bonehill and Craig Smith, both alternative fuel experts at Stream Marine Technical, shared practical perspectives on what operators, managers and crew need to know about methanol training and the IGF Code.

IGF Code Training for the Transition

At Stream Marine Training, we offer a range of courses certified to international standards to ensure safe and effective fuel transitions:

🔹 IGF Code Basic Training – For seafarers with designated safety duties on vessels using low-flashpoint fuels
🔹 IGF Code Advanced Training – For those responsible for the care, use, and operation of fuel systems
🔹 Awareness-level modules and conversion training – Supporting management and shoreside personnel

We are proud to be helping shape the future of training in partnership with Stream Marine Technical and in response to industry needs.
