Today is International Women in Maritime Day, and at Stream Marine Training, it’s a day that means something.

As a training provider for the maritime, offshore, oil & gas, and renewables sectors, we sit right at the point where people enter and progress through the industry. We see first-hand the talent, ambition, and capability that women bring to maritime, and we believe that creating a more inclusive industry isn’t just the right thing to do, it’s essential for the future of the sector.

This year’s IMO theme, “From Policy to Practice”, cuts to the heart of where the conversation needs to go. Words matter, but action matters more.

Our Group Managing Director, Katy Womersley, knows that better than most. Having gone to sea at 17, Katy has spent nearly three decades in an industry she entered without hesitation – not because she didn’t notice the gender imbalance, but because she was raised to believe women and men could take on any role. She brought that same belief ashore with her, and it shapes how we approach everything at Stream Marine Training Group.

Katy is among a group of remarkable women from across the global maritime industry who have shared their perspectives this Women in Maritime Day. Their stories cover everything from the challenge of proving credibility in a room that doesn’t expect you, to what it really means to balance a demanding career with family life, to the advice they’d give to anyone considering maritime as a career.

It’s a genuinely compelling read, and one we’d encourage anyone with an interest in the future of this industry to spend time with.
