STCW Basic Safety Training Week (BSW)

Our individual dates for STCW Basic Safety courses are still currently being arranged if you require to book separately.

Under STCW, all new entrants to the maritime industries are required to complete an STCW Basic Safety Training Week before joining a vessel.

It is made up of the following courses,

Personal Survival Techniques (PST)

Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (FPFF)

Elementary First Aid (EFA)

Security Awareness (PSA)

Personal Safety and Social Responsibility (PSSR)

These courses can be taken individually or can be taken together in this cost saving package.

Successful delegates will be awarded with an MCA approved STCW certifications (EFA, FPFF, PST, PSSR and PSA) after a short exam. 

Every 5 years for PST and FPFF elements.

A Government issued, photographic proof of identity on the day of the course and this should take the form of either a valid Passport or a driving licence or a valid discharge book (not more than 10 years old).   

STCW requires all seafarers to receive familiarization and basic safety training or instruction in accordance with section A-VI/1 of the STCW Code. The minimum requirements for familiarization and basic safety training are contained within the Basic Safety Training Week (BSTW) and meet the appropriate standard of competence.

STCW Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (FPFF)

The STCW Fire Prevention and Firefighting course is set up to offer delegates pursing, or in need of Certificates of Competence, capable seafarers, UK watch ratings and others with survival roles at sea the necessary teaching and training in fire prevention and firefighting that attains the required knowledge, understanding and proficiency laid out in the STCW code.  

Theory Development: 

  • Fire theory 

  • Causes of ignition 

  • Onboard safety 

  • The conditions required for fire 

  • Methods to extinguish fire 

  • The spread of fire 

  • Classes of fire 

Practical Experience: 

  • Carrying out the initial actions on discovering a fire 

  • Identifying the environment 

  • Correctly using portable and mobile fire extinguishers 

  • The use of hoses, nozzles and hose equipment 

  • Extinguishing different types of fire 

  • Testing and using BA equipment 

  1. Delegates must be physically capable to undertake this course. The training is taxing, therefore a medical declaration is required from delegates before undergoing the course. If you are uncertain, please consult a doctor.

Successful delegates will be awarded with an MCA approved STCW Fire Prevention and Firefighting certificate, after a short exam.  

 

You will need writing materials, Towel, toiletries and change of clothing are required.

You must wear comfortable clothes, but not jeans and not clothing with metal built in.

STCW Elementary First Aid (EFA)

The STCW Elementary First Aid course is set up to configure part of the mandatory Basic Safety Training (BST) for seafarers. This teaching will give prospective seafarers’ basic knowledge of the immediate response to give when faced with medical emergencies or accidents whilst at sea.  

  • Applying immediate first aid in the event of an accident/injury on board ship 

  • Actions on discovering a casualty 

  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation 

  • Recovery position 

  • Fractures 

  • Spinal injuries 

  • Examination of a casualty 

  • Medical conditions including heart attack, choking & asthma 

  • Treatment of bleeding, burns & shock 

  • Transporting a casualty on board ship

STCW Personal Survival Techniques (PST)

The Personal Survival Techniques (PST) course is set up to form part of the mandatory Basic Safety Training for seafarers conforming with section A-VI/1 of the STCW code. This course will give seafarers the relevant knowledge, understanding and proficiency to safeguard themselves and others onboard under international regulations. Delegates will be awarded with their certificates following a short exam.  

  • How to don a life jacket 

  • How to safely jump from a height into water 

  • How to right an inverted raft whilst wearing a life jacket 

  • How to swim whilst wearing a life jacket 

  • How to board a survival craft from the water whilst wearing a life jacket 

  • What initial actions you need to take when boarding survival craft 

  • How to operate survival craft equipment 

  1. Delegates must be 16 years or older to undergo the STCW Personal Survival Techniques (PST) training course. 
  2. Elements of the training are physically demanding, because of this you must return a medical self-declaration form before commencement of your participation on the course. Please consult your doctor if you have any questions.

STCW Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (PSSR)

STCW Personal Safety and Social Responsibility course is set up to offer a basic introduction for prospective seafarers in safety procedures and accident prevention while informing them on the employment conditions and working environments that they can expect of merchant ships, while on the half day course. After sitting a short examination, you will receive the STCW certificate.

  • Shipboard organisation/general shipboard terms 

  • Emergency procedures 

  • Observe safe working practices 

  • Understand and take necessary actions to control fatigue 

  • Pollution prevention 

  • Shipboard duties and responsibilities

STCW Security Awareness (SA)

We are currently running STCW Security Awareness - Webinar if you would like to take this course on-line via Zoom platform.

 

The STCW Proficiency in Maritime Security Awareness Webinar course is set up to offer crew on board merchant ships, who are not assigned security duties, with the essential awareness needed. This course ensures that delegates will leave with the knowledge, understanding and proficiency requirements that are set out in the STCW code. This is mandatory training that must be done by all seafarers that’s role requires them to comply with the ISPS code. The course is run online, it can be accessed with a computer, tablet, or smartphone. The STCW certificate will be awarded following a short online exam. 

Delegates will receive a hyperlink to the online meeting via email.
