BIGF & AIGF & LNG
What are BIGF, AIGF, and LNG, and why are they important for maritime professionals?
BIGF (Basic Introduction to Gas-Fuelled Ships), AIGF (Advanced Training for Service on Ships Using Fuels Covered within the IGF Code), and LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) training courses are designed to meet the STCW requirements for crew working on vessels using gas as fuel. These courses ensure that maritime professionals understand the risks, safety protocols, and operational practices required for gas-fuelled vessel operations.
What BIGF, AIGF, and LNG courses does Stream Marine Training offer?
Stream Marine Training offers MCA-approved training for both introductory and advanced levels, including BIGF and AIGF courses. These are essential for crew working on ships powered by LNG and other fuels governed by the IGF Code. LNG-specific training modules can also be included as part of the curriculum. Please see the list above for course availability and dates.
Who should take BIGF, AIGF, or LNG training courses?
These courses are designed for seafarers responsible for the operation, maintenance, or safety of ships using LNG or other low-flashpoint fuels. BIGF is intended for officers and ratings at the operational level, while AIGF is suited for senior officers at the management level.
How long are the certifications valid?
Certificates are generally valid for five years, in line with STCW guidance. Regular refresher training is recommended to remain compliant with international safety standards and company-specific requirements.
What topics are covered in BIGF and AIGF training?
Training includes fuel system design and operation, risk management, bunkering procedures, fire safety, emergency procedures, and environmental compliance. Advanced courses (AIGF) go deeper into ship-specific procedures, troubleshooting, and leadership in emergency situations.
Can I take these courses online, or are they only offered in person?
Due to their practical components, these courses are delivered in person at our state-of-the-art training facilities, which include access to LNG bunkering simulators and real-life emergency drills. Some theory components may be supported online or as blended learning where appropriate.
How do I book a BIGF, AIGF or LNG course with Stream Marine Training?
Booking is simple—just select your desired course from the options above, or visit our course booking portal. For support or custom group bookings, feel free to contact us directly.
Is there a progression route from BIGF to AIGF?
Yes. BIGF serves as the foundational qualification, and once completed, candidates can advance to AIGF, which is required for personnel in senior roles or management positions on LNG-fuelled vessels.
Are BIGF and AIGF courses recognised internationally?
Yes, both are MCA-approved and meet the requirements of the STCW Convention and Code, making them globally recognised qualifications for working on gas-fuelled ships.
Do I need any prior experience to take these courses?
Participants for BIGF should hold a valid STCW certificate. AIGF attendees must already hold a BIGF certificate or equivalent experience. For LNG-specific modules, prior sea service may be required. Stream Marine Training can advise you on your eligibility.
