STCW Medical Care on Board Ship Update (MCOBU)

The STCW Proficiency in Medical Care On-board Update (MCOBU) course is set up to cover the requirements given in Article 4(1)(b) of the Directive ‘92/29 EEC: Service as Master or the person in charge of medical care on UK-registered vessels’. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) requires that the Master and the person designated to take charge of medical care and medicines on-board to hold an MCA-approved Proficiency in Medical Care (PMC) (STCW A-VI/4 paragraph 4-6) certificate or an MCA-approved Updated Proficiency in Medical Care certificate, issued within the preceding 5 years. 

This course offers delegates with the Proficiency in Medical Care certificate, or Proficiency in Medical Care Updating certificate a refresher in knowledge and skills, every five years. 

  • The delegate understands how to participate in the coordinated provision of medical care to a person on board

  • The delegate can assess and provide care to an ill person on board

  • The delegate can assess and provide care to an injured casualty on board

Successful candidates will be awarded with an MCA approved STCW Proficiency in Medical Care On-board Update (MCOBU) certificate, after a short exam.

GWO Basic Safety Training Refresher (BSTR)

The approved GWO Basic Safety Training Refresher (BSTR) refreshes, reviews and builds on Delegates existing skills and tools obtained during BST courses, which include Fire Awareness, First Aid, Working at Heights and Manual Handling. To enable Delegates to work in the offshore environment, an additional GWO Sea Survival training shall be completed.

A participant is only allowed to attend a refresher course in the specific training module prior to the date of expiry on the current certificate or training records. If a certificate or training record is expired, the participant must attend the full Basic Safety Module(s) Training(s) to obtain a new training record.

GWO Fire Awareness Refresher (FAWR)

The aim of this course is to give the delegates the basic knowledge and skills through theoretical and practical training.
Delegates should be able to prevent fires, make appropriate judgements when evaluating a fire, manage evacuation of personnel and ensure all are safely accounted for in the event of an unmanageable fire. If the incident is judged to be safe, the delegates should be able to efficiently extinguish an initial fire by using basic hand held firefighting equipment.

A participant is only allowed to attend a refresher course in the specific training module prior to the date of expiry on the current certificate or training records. GWO Fire Awareness Refresher (FAWR)

GWO Sea Survival Refresher (SSR)

The aims of this BST Sea Survival course are, by theoretical and practical training to give the participants the basic knowledge and skills to act safely and take the correct preventive actions in all aspects of offshore operations from shore to installation vessel or WTG and vice versa, both during normal operation and in an emergency in an offshore wind energy environment.

If a certificate or training record is expired, the participant must attend the full Basic Safety Module(s) Training(s) to obtain a new training record.

GWO BSTR Sea Survival Refresher

  • The Delegates can demonstrate the needed awareness of the site organisation and relevant legislation to ensure that the candidates are aware of the roles, responsibilities and rules that apply to offshore wind farms.
  • The Delegates can demonstrate the needed knowledge to understand the importance of correct clothing and conduct in an offshore wind farm environment. Further to enable skills of detecting and treating stages of cold shock, hypothermia and drowning related to exposures to the human body in an offshore wind environment.
  • The Delegates can demonstrate the needed knowledge and skills to recognise the advantages and limitations of personal LSA and PPE and usage in a correct and safe manner.
  • The Delegates can demonstrate the needed knowledge related to GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress and Safety Systems) and SAR (Search and Rescue).
  • The Delegates can demonstrate the needed skills individually and collective to enhance the chance of survival in an emergency at sea.
  • The Delegates can demonstrate the needed knowledge to recognise the hazards and risks of transfer and take the correct preventive measures into account by following procedures and use the available LSA and PPE in a correct and safe manner.

Before personnel can be assessed against the standards, they will require the knowledge and skills to enable them to carry out the emergency response tasks involved. They will require emergency response training and practice before being assessed. The purpose of this course is to set out the basic training, further practice and assessment requirements for Offshore Emergency Response Team Leaders which will be conducted at an onshore training centre. The learner should recognise that this is only part of a broader training programme. There will also be company and installation-specific emergency response training, most of which will be conducted offshore on a regular basis as offshore drills and exercises.

1.1 Implement an appropriate initial response plan by conducting an effective Incident Brief for the

emergency in a clear and concise manner, confirming ER team’s understanding.

QA Level 4 Award in Immediate Life Support (RQF)

1 Day

During this 1 day course, Learners will develop the necessary skills associated with immediate life support, including: airway management, patient assessment, management of major illness/injury, post-incident procedures, Managing the Return of Spontaneous Circulation (RoSC), patient handovers and more.

QA Level 4 Award in Immediate Life Support (RQF)

Learners must have successfully completed the QA Level 4 Certificate in First Response Emergency Care (QCF or RQF) or similar qualification, e.g. Associate Ambulance Practitioner, IHCD Ambulance Aid or be a registered healthcare professional working in an emergency care or primary care environment.

This qualification is valid for a period of 1 year. The Learner needs to retake the qualification before the certificate expiry date to remain qualified.

The QA Level 4 Award in Immediate Life Support (RQF) is ideal for those who have a responsibility at work, or in community or voluntary activities to provide emergency care to patients, such as event medical providers, emergency ambulance personnel, registered healthcare professionals and those working in specialist roles within the emergency services and military.

The STCW Updated Proficiency in Advanced Fire Fighting course relates to Section A-VI/3 of the STCW Code (paragraph 50 that states that ‘Seafarers qualified in accordance with paragraph 4 in advanced fire fighting shall be required, every 5 years, to provide evidence of having maintained the required standard of competence, to undertake the tasks, duties and responsibilities listed in column 1 of Table A VI/3.’ 

  • Control fire fighting operations onboard ship 

  • Organise and control fire fighting parties 

  • Inspect and service fire detection and extinguishing systems and equipment 

  • Investigate and compile reports on incidents involving fire 

  1. Proof of completing the STCW Advanced Fire Fighting training course (STCW Reg VI/3 para 1 & Sec A-VI/3) or recognised equivalent pre 31 January 2000 (i.e. MNTB 4 Day Fire Fighting Course ).

  2. You must also complete/show evidence of the updating training in Proficiency in Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting as per MSN1865.

  3. Photographic ID (A Government issued, photographic proof of identity on the day of the course and this should take the form of either a valid Passport or a driving license or a valid discharge book).
